Draft #2: Harper Lee’s one and only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is a great depiction of life in the South during the Great Depression. Set in a sleepy Alabama town in the 1930′s, the book is written from the viewpoint of a young girl, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. Jean Louise “Scout” lives with her older brother, Jeremy “Jem” Finch and her widowed lawyer father, Atticus. As a youngster, Scout and her brother befriends a boy named Dill, and they all spend their leisure time in the summer fabricating the life of a man who never left his house, Arthur “Boo” Radley. He was imagined by the town as some sort of “specter”, for he has never been seen in daylight for twenty years. As the book weaves on, their father is chosen to defend an innocent man, who by the nature of the color of his skin is automatically guilty. Scout witnessed the black man, Tom Robinson, who was blatantly innocent, get convicted by the jury and shot seventeen times for attempting escape. During the aftermath, Scout and her brother have to come to terms with the realization that their lives will be forever affected. They find out that a long time recluse of the town is not who he seems to be and the injustice of physical color is yank-your-hair-out-from-exasperation unjust. Gradually their childhood roleplaying of Boo Radley and the injustice of their father’s defendant converge into one storyline. Innocence, guilt, justice, racism, and family are concepts woven into this amazing tale with ______________________ idk
